The commitment
The UK government has signed up to the EU Renewable Energy Directive, which includes a UK target of 15 percent of energy from renewables by 2020. This will contribute to the reduction of the UK’s carbon emissions by 750 million tonnes by 2030. This environmental approach is being replicated throughout the world, with respective governments implementing their own proactive policies towards carbon reduction.

For the UK, this target is equivalent to a seven-fold increase in renewable energy consumption from 2008 levels: the most challenging of any EU Member State. While such an increase is ambitious, and will be challenging, the UK government is fully committed to meeting the target.

The challenge
The UK aims to meet its targets by generating more than 30% of our electricity from renewables, up from about 5.5% in 2009.

The main types of technologies that will be employed include:

• Wind, on and offshore
• Solar
• Hydro 
• Wave and tidal

along with other low carbon technologies that include biomass, energy from waste (efw) and anaerobic digestion. These are discussed on another page.
